The role of extracellular polymeric substances on aerobic granulation with stepwise increase of salinity

Abstract A granular sequencing batch reactor (GSBR) worked for 164 days to study the effect of salinity on aerobic granulation. The feeding had an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.6 kg COD⋅m −3 ⋅d −1 and a gradual increase of salinity (from 0.30 to 38 g NaCl − ⋅L −1 ) to promote a biological salt-adaptation. First aggregates (average diameter ≈ 0.4 mm) appeared after 14 days. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) analyses revealed that proteins were mainly higher than polysaccharides, and microorganisms metabolized EPSs as additional carbon source, mostly in feast phase, to face the energy demand for salinity adaptation. Effect of Stiffness on the Micellization Behavior of Model H4T4 Surfactant Chains

The micellization behavior of a series of model surfactants, all with four head and tail groups (H4T4) but with different degrees of chain stiffness, was studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on a cubic lattice. The critical micelle concentration, micellar size, and thermodynamics of micellization were examined. In all cases investigated, the critical micelle concentration was found to increase with increasing temperature as observed for nonionic surfactants in apolar or slightly polar solvents. Relationships between soil water repellency and microbial community composition under different plant species in a Mediterranean semiarid forest

Abstract Soil water repellency (SWR) can influence many hydrological soil properties, including water infiltration, uneven moisture distribution or water retention. In the current study we investigated how variable SWR persistence in the field is related to the soil microbial community under different plant species (P. halepensis, Q. rotundifolia, C. albidus and R. officinalis) in a Mediterranean forest. Electroplated Ni/Ni-Co multilayer coatings for higher corrosion-erosion resistance

Erosion-corrosion behaviour of hierarchical structured hydrophobic nickel-cobalt coating, obtained by electrodeposition, was assessed. In situ electrochemical measurements were carried out to study the corrosion resistance and stability during erosion tests. The electrochemical behaviour was related to surface hydrophobicity and its hierarchical structure nature as well as its modification. The pure Ni showed the lowest erosion-corrosion resistance. A smoothing of the hierarchical structure and thus a reduction the hydrophobicity was highlighted. Comparing different application procedures of the water drop penetration time test to assess soil water repellency in a fire affected Sicilian area

Abstract The Water Drop Penetration Time (WDPT) technique was applied in two subsequent years (2016 and 2017) to check surface soil water repellency (SWR) in a Sicilian mountain area affected by a wildfire on June 2016. A total of 93 sites were sampled and from 3 to 100 droplets were used to characterize a site. The detected SWR varied with the severity of the wildfire, being practically absent in the unburnt control area and slight to extreme in the burnt areas. The percentage of extremely repellent sites increased with wildfire severity. Influence of the drying processes of yeasts on their volatile phenol sorption capacity in model wine.

Thus, the study of volatile phenol sorption in yeasts, and their subsequent elimination from wine, helps to optimize eco-friendly wine curative processes.
